Nancy Young was the second child and eldest daughter of Capt Levi Young and Anna of Foster.
Both beautiful and clever, she took over the accounting for the farm [purchased by her father when he retired from the military – located near the border with Connecticut].
She had a promising future ahead but fell ill in the blush of her youth. At first the family took her illness to be a simple flu, but when she fell to the bed and didn`t leave it for almost a month, it was clear to everyone that something wasn`t right.
She died of “galloping consumption” [tuberculosis] on April 6th 1827 in the town of Foster, Rhode Island. She was only 19.
After a couple of months, Almira, another family member took ill, and claimed that Nancy appeared to her and advised her that her pain would soon be over.
The village council reunited and came to the conclusion that the Young family was cursed and plagued by a demon that resided in Nancy`s body. Capt Young suspected Nancy to be a vampire and proceeded to dealing with it the best way he could.
Her body was exhumed and burned in entirety while the family stood about and breathed in the smoke.
It was believed that the fumes from the coffin would cleanse the family members but the effort brought no relief.
Almira died on August 19, 1828 at age 17 and was followed into the grave by 4 more Young children:
– Olney [29 year-old son] on December 12, 1831;
– Huldah [aged 23] in August 1836;
– Caleb [26 of age] on May 8 1843;
– Hyram [35 year old] on February 17 1854.
Nancy Young’s grave is located deep in the woods off Jencks Road, not far from the Connecticut border, in the Young family plot.
