Name: John Brennan Crutchley aka “The Vampire Rapist”
Born – 1946 / Died – 2002
Number of victims: Between 1 and 30+
As a child, John was reclusive and had almost no social life.
He would spend his days in the basement working on small electronics. His level of intelligence enabled him to obtain a degree in physics and start developing a career in engineering.
His personal life as an adult was seemingly normal: he married twice [first in 1969 and the second time in the mid-1970s], he moved around the states depending on where his work projects took him.
However all was not as it appeared! Under the mask of John Brennan Crutchley there was another – morbid and blood thirsty: The Vampire Rapist!
He drained the blood of his victims to the point of near death while asphyxiating and repeatedly sexually assaulting the women.
Despite not being tried and convicted for murder, he was suspected of more than 30 homicides!
What made it possible for the police and FBI to catch him was a non-fatal kidnapping and sexual assault. On a late November night in 1985 a trucker detected someone crawling on the side of the road. Upon closer inspection he realized that it was a nude teenager in an advanced state of shock. She had been handcuffed at both feet and ankles and was unable to communicate any information; she kept asking not to be taken back “to that house”.
The man called both police and an ambulance thus setting in motion the events that led to the arrest of the vampire rapist. Her name was Laura Murphy and she was only 19! All she wanted was to buy a pack of cigs when she was kidnapped.
At the hospital it became apparent that she was missing 40 to 45% of her blood quantity. When she was able to offer more information it was enough to make officers solicit a search warrant on John Crutchley`s house.
The hitchhiker awoke to find that she was tied to a kitchen countertop, arms and legs immobilized. A video camera had been set up, along with lights. The man raped her and videotaped the action. Then he inserted needles into her arm and wrist and carefully extracted blood and began to drink it, telling her that he was a vampire. After that, he handcuffed her and put her in the bathtub, returning later for another round of sexual assault and blood extraction. The next morning, after a third round, the man handcuffed the hitchhiker and left her in the bathroom, saying that he would be back later for further assaults, and that if she tried to escape in the interim, his brother would come and kill her. It was after the attacker had left the house that she was able to push out of the bathroom window and crawl to the road. Had she not escaped then, doctors believed, she might well have died from a further round of blood extraction.

Laura was adamant that her rape was videotaped, unfortunately the tape was partially erased and the police only took notes of certain items before being forced to leave. By the time they were able to take another warrant Crutchley had the time to dispose of the incriminating items: a stack of credit cards several inches thick, cats and dogs tags [he didn`t have any pets], a collection of women’s necklaces [separated from the jewelry of his wife and hidden in a closet].
The FBI was brought in by the local authorities and the second warrant was a lot wider than the initial one. It prompted: a jar full of human hair, a stack of 72 3×5 cards on which Crutchley had recorded women’s names and described their sexual performances
Some of the women confirmed that Crutchley had crossed the limits of consensual S&M and that he had a fetish for asphyxiation. [Note: the wife did not consider him to be over the top and commented to reporters on the rape of Laura Murphy that it was “a gentle rape, devoid of any overt brutality.”]
During interrogations he initially claimed that Laura came over willingly and that she was willing to have a good time while his wife and child were away for the Thanksgiving Weekend.
Apparently the Vampire Rapist was introduced to the drinking of blood in the early part of 1970 by a nurse as part of a sexual experience / ritual.
In June 1986, Crutchley pleaded guilty on kidnapping and rape charges and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison with 50 years of subsequent parole.
He was released on the 8th of August 1996 yet was rearrested the very next day because he has on pot and violated his parole. Because it was his third strike he was convicted to life in prison.
Crutchley died in prison in 2002 with a plastic bag over his head in what was later confirmed to be autoerotic asphyxiation.
